DOWNE STAFF EXPERIENCE SERVICE OFFERED BY FOLD'S BRAIN BUS

Tue 19th April 2011

The Fold Brain Bus has visited the Downe Hospital to provide staff with the opportunity to experience what this unique mobile therapy unit has to offer for people with dementia.

The Brain Bus seeks to harness the latest technology to bring real benefits to people with dementia. The Brain Bus is fitted with adaptive technologies which engage the user both cognitive and physically. The activities have been developed to stimulate the user through their memories, interests and physical exercise.

The Brain Bus enables users to use the touch screen computers to complete puzzles, quizzes and games; or reminisce through person tailored music, photos and video. For those who wish to take a little excursion there are simulators for cycling, driving and even flying.

Dr Bob Brown, Assistant Director of Primary Care and Nursing in the South Eastern Health & Social Care Trust welcomed the visit, saying “The Trust is delighted to have hosted the Fold Brain Bus, and for the opportunity this gave our staff to sample the technology that is a vital way of helping older people with dementia to maintain and further develop their interests. The South Eastern Trust remains committed to enabling as many people as possible with dementia, to remain at home living independently and this excellent service will play an important part in enabling this to happen”.

Leslie Kelling, Project Co-ordinator with Fold commented "We are excited to expand our service offerings to other dementia care providers in the South Eastern and Belfast Health and Social Care Trusts. We look forward to enhancing the quality of life for people living with dementia in this region."
